A prolific shoplifter has become the first convicted offender in West Sussex to be fitted with a real-time Buddi monitoring tag, Sussex Police has announced.
The measure forms part of a three-year Criminal Behaviour Order imposed after Daryl Hunt, 30, admitted 13 shoplifting offences at a Co-op store in South Street, Tarring, Worthing.
What the court ordered
Hunt, of no fixed address, appeared at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on 17 August. He received a six-month suspended prison sentence and was ordered to complete six months of mental health treatment alongside 30 rehabilitation activity requirement sessions.
The Criminal Behaviour Order also bans him from entering Co-op stores. Sussex Police said the electronic tag was fitted on 19 August following an earlier pilot of the technology in East Sussex.
How the Buddi tag works
Buddi tags allow police to monitor an offender’s movements in real time. The force says the technology can help deter further offences, identify breaches or tampering quickly, and support efforts to change repeat offending behaviour.
Police described the case as an example of the work being carried out with retailers and the courts to tackle persistent shoplifting across Sussex.
Businesses and residents can report non-emergency crime through the Sussex Police online reporting service. In an emergency, call 999.
