Privacy Policy
Last updated: 17 September 2026
Brighton Locals (“we”, “us” or “our”) operates brightonlocals.co.uk, a local directory for Brighton, Hove and Sussex. This policy explains how we collect, use and protect personal information under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
Information we collect
We may collect your name, email address, telephone number, account and profile details, business listing information, reviews, messages sent through forms, subscription and invoice details, IP address, browser/device information and website usage data. Payment card details are processed by our payment provider and are not stored by Brighton Locals.
How we use information
- To create and manage accounts, listings and subscriptions.
- To publish information you choose to include in a public business listing.
- To process payments, send service messages and respond to enquiries.
- To moderate reviews, prevent fraud, spam and misuse, and keep the website secure.
- To improve our services and measure website performance.
- To send marketing only where you have consented or where the law otherwise permits; you can unsubscribe at any time.
Our lawful bases
We rely on performance of a contract, legitimate interests in operating and improving the directory, compliance with legal obligations and consent where required. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time.
Public listings and user content
Business names, addresses, contact details, photographs, descriptions, opening hours, reviews and other information submitted for publication may be visible publicly and indexed by search engines. Do not submit personal information that you do not want made public. Listing owners are responsible for having authority to provide their content.
Sharing information
We may share necessary information with hosting, security, analytics, email, form, mapping, payment and professional service providers acting for us. We may also disclose information where required by law, to protect rights and safety, or as part of a business transfer. We do not sell personal information.
International transfers
Some service providers may process data outside the UK. Where this happens, we use appropriate safeguards recognised by UK data-protection law.
Cookies and analytics
We use essential cookies for security, login and website functionality, and may use analytics or marketing cookies where permitted. See our Cookie Policy for details and choices.
Retention
We keep information only for as long as needed for the purposes described, including legal, accounting, fraud-prevention and dispute requirements. Account and transaction records may be retained after closure where the law requires it. Public content may remain in backups for a limited period after deletion.
Your rights
You may have rights to access, correct, erase, restrict or object to processing, and to data portability. You may withdraw consent and complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk. Rights may be limited where a legal exemption applies.
Children
Brighton Locals is not intended for children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect information, but no online service can guarantee absolute security.
