Varndean Sixth Form College has secured up to £4.44 million from the government’s Post-16 Capacity Fund for a new Skills and Business Building in Brighton.
The college says the project will add nine teaching rooms, including space dedicated to business education. It also plans to replace temporary teaching accommodation with permanent facilities on its campus.
What is planned?
The new building is intended to give students more teaching space as the college serves young people from Brighton, Hove and the wider Sussex area. Varndean says it expects the building to open to students in August 2028. That is a projected opening date, not an announcement that construction is complete.
The award is described as up to £4.44 million, so the announced figure should not be read as a final construction cost. The college’s announcement does not set out a detailed building timetable or say when work will start.
Why it matters locally
Additional permanent rooms could expand the college’s capacity and improve the space available for sixth-form teaching, particularly business courses. For prospective students and families, the immediate point is that this is a future campus investment: the expected opening is almost two academic years away.
Brighton Locals will update this report when the college publishes a construction schedule or a confirmed opening date.
