Legal & General plans to remove around 1,000 roles by the middle of 2027, a restructuring that could affect staff connected with one of Brighton and Hove’s largest private-sector employers.
The insurance and pensions group expects to reduce its workforce by about 10 per cent as part of a programme to simplify the organisation. Most of the company’s roughly 10,000 employees are based in the UK.
What has been announced
UK staff will initially be invited to apply for voluntary redundancy. Compulsory cuts have not been ruled out if the voluntary programme does not reach the required number. Legal & General’s asset management division is excluded because it has already undergone a separate restructuring.
The company said it would consult unions and support employees through the process. The reductions are expected to be completed by mid-2027.
Why it matters in Brighton and Hove
Legal & General has a long-established presence in Hove and remains a significant local employer. The company has not published a breakdown showing how many of the proposed reductions will fall at individual sites, so the effect on the local office is not yet clear.
That distinction matters: the 1,000 figure applies across the wider organisation and should not be interpreted as a confirmed total for Brighton and Hove.
Company restructuring
The changes form part of a wider simplification programme under chief executive António Simões. Legal & General has reduced its operating structure from four businesses to three and sold assets including housebuilder Cala Homes.
The company says the latest changes will allow it to focus resources on areas with the strongest long-term growth opportunities.
