Last updated: 1 November 2026, 09:08 GMT. This is a new Sunday warning, separate from the Surrey alert reported on Friday.

A Brighton fog warning includes Brighton & Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex until 10am GMT on Sunday 1 November, the Met Office’s published affected-area list confirms. People making early journeys should allow for patches of poor visibility and check their transport operator before leaving.

Brighton fog warning: what has changed

The Met Office warning was issued at 23:18 GMT on Saturday 31 October. It describes fog persisting into Sunday morning before gradually lifting, with possible road, bus, train and flight delays. That is a risk assessment, not confirmation that a particular service has been delayed or cancelled.

For local passengers, poor visibility is an extra consideration on a day when the Brighton–Lewes railway is already closed for engineering work. Check the replacement-bus journey as well as any onward train.

What you should do

Check the warning map against your whole route, then use National Rail’s journey planner and departures or Brighton & Hove Buses’ service updates for the service you intend to use.

The Department for Transport’s Highway Code, rules 226 and 234–236, requires headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally below 100 metres. Slow before entering fog, keep a safe gap and be able to stop within the distance you can see. Fog lights must be switched off when visibility improves.

Brighton Locals’ view

Editorial judgement: The useful response is extra journey time and a route check. A county-wide warning cannot tell a driver what is visible around the next bend, and it should not be turned into an unsupported claim of city-wide disruption.

What happens next

The scheduled expiry is 10am. Check the live warning for an extension or change; expiry does not promise that every remaining patch of fog disappears immediately.

Bottom line: Check the journey, allow time and drive to the visibility in front of you.
