Brighton and Hove residents planning to start an eligible course between 1 January and 31 July 2027 can now apply for the Lifelong Learning Entitlement, after the Student Loans Company opened its initial application service on 30 October. The launch matters particularly to adults comparing study with work or caring commitments: the new route combines funding previously handled through different systems, but it is borrowing rather than a universal education grant.

Lifelong Learning Entitlement in Brighton: who should check now?

The Student Loans Company announcement says the system replaces previous undergraduate funding for eligible Student Finance England applicants. It also covers certain postgraduate healthcare and teaching qualifications and some provision previously supported through Advanced Learner Loans. That does not mean every short course, postgraduate degree or training provider qualifies.

The government’s detailed guide is the starting point for checking the actual course and your circumstances. People normally resident in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or the Crown Dependencies have different application arrangements. A course being taught in Brighton does not, on its own, decide which funding system applies.

Read the entitlement as a funding allowance

For applicants without previous student finance, the standard tuition-loan entitlement is up to £39,160, described by SLC as roughly 480 credits. A typical full-time bachelor’s year carries 120 credits. Charges vary, so credits and cash are separate limits to check rather than a promise that every course will cost the same.

Earlier publicly funded study is taken into account. The online account can provide an estimate of the tuition borrowing available before an applicant commits to applying for finance. Some longer or specified courses may qualify for additional tuition support. Maintenance borrowing depends on factors including household income, living arrangements and study credits; the national maximum in a release should not be treated as an individual offer.

Why it matters locally

Brighton and Hove has universities, further-education provision and residents whose next qualification may come years after their first. For that audience, the important change is a new application route and a funding calculation that needs checking before choosing a January start. Flexibility in finance is useful only if a suitable course, timetable and realistic living-cost budget also work.

Our local jobs section can help readers compare current opportunities alongside retraining plans. A course place, an application for finance and an eventual funding award remain separate steps. None should be inferred from the opening of the service.

Brighton Locals’ view

Our judgement: opening the service is a practical improvement for eligible January entrants, particularly those who need time to organise work and care. The limitation is the gap between the headline entitlement and what an individual can actually borrow. Clear estimates of remaining tuition support and maintenance costs will matter more than the size of the headline figure.

What you should do

  1. Confirm the exact course, provider, start date and credit total.
  2. Read the official eligibility guide and check how previous study affects your allowance.
  3. Follow the application link from GOV.UK and use or create a GOV.UK One Login.
  4. Ask the provider separately about admission, timetable, fees and any bursary or hardship support.
  5. Check the repayment terms before accepting a loan.

The official guide describes Plan 5 repayment and interest applying from the first payment, with any remaining balance written off under the scheme’s 40-year rule. These are loans with long-term terms, not an automatic cash payment for taking a course.

What happens next

Spring 2027 is the stated next opening for 2027/28 applications. For now, applicants should use the confirmed January–July window and avoid assuming that September-start applications are already open. We will reassess the practical value as eligibility, provider availability and application experiences become clearer.

The useful first step is a personal funding check, before committing to a course or changing working hours.
