Brighton to Lewes trains will be replaced by buses on Sunday 1 November while engineering work closes all lines between the two stations. Passengers heading along the East Coastway, into Brighton for the Veteran Car Run or towards London should check the complete journey: there are separate changes on the main line too.
Brighton to Lewes trains: which journeys change?
National Rail’s dated notice identifies Southern routes between Brighton and Seaford, Lewes, Eastbourne and Ore. It also records longer Victoria–Brighton journeys, additional calls at Wivelsfield, Preston Park and Hove, and fewer Brighton–Hove trains. This is a scheduled Sunday closure, not a newly reported incident.
Check the main line separately
Southern’s 1 November engineering list adds that no Thameslink trains run between Haywards Heath and Brighton. Thameslink tickets are accepted on Southern between Three Bridges/Haywards Heath and Brighton at no extra cost, with diverted journeys via Hove. Gatwick Express also has an amended timetable and longer journeys.
A replacement bus on one section does not describe your whole trip. Use the planner for both the outward and return journey, including the operator and station where you change.
What residents need to know
Check National Rail’s journey planner for the actual departure you need. Read station signs for replacement-bus boarding points; do not assume the normal local bus stop is used. Allow additional time for boarding and connections.
Southern says it provides accessible replacement vehicles, with its assisted-travel team arranging an alternative journey where that is not possible. Contact the operator about your particular access needs before setting out. Bicycle carriage and luggage arrangements also need checking for the replacement vehicle rather than assuming train rules apply.
Visitors to the Madeira Drive Veteran Car Run finish should combine the arrival window with their revised travel plan. The event timetable does not override the rail timetable.
Brighton Locals’ view
Our assessment: the important point is the combination of East Coastway replacement buses and main-line diversions. Planning only the missing Brighton–Lewes train could still leave a passenger with an unexpected change elsewhere. A complete return itinerary is the useful preparation.
What happens next
Recheck the dated notices and live departures on Sunday. This report covers 1 November; our 2 November early-airport-train report concerns a different period.
Sunday travel remains possible, but familiar routes and connection times cannot be assumed.
