The Google Cloud OpenAI preview is available to selected enterprise customers, rather than every business with a Google account. Google’s 21 October announcement remains useful for Sussex teams planning AI deployments because some prominently described security capabilities are still promised for later.
What the Google Cloud OpenAI preview actually offers
The original Google Cloud announcement says the models are rolling out in model garden, with transactions through Google Cloud Marketplace and usage on a Google Cloud invoice. It also says the models will come later to Gemini for business and Google Antigravity.
Google states that customer prompts, context and outputs remain within a designated data perimeter and are not used to train foundation models. These are provider claims about its service, not findings from an independent Brighton Locals audit. The same text describes additional retention and confidential-computing options as future features.
Why that distinction matters to a business
A team choosing a model is also choosing an operating arrangement: who can access it, which contract covers the work and how sensitive information is handled. A feature listed in a launch article should not become a requirement marked complete in a procurement document until it is available for the intended account and deployment.
For a Brighton agency or software team, keeping an existing billing relationship may be convenient. It does not, by itself, establish that the new route is cheaper or that every existing approval automatically applies to another model provider.
What to check before committing
- Ask whether your organisation has preview access, and whether the specific model and region you need are included.
- Confirm the retention arrangements that apply now. Do not substitute a promised future option for the terms currently available.
- Get the applicable pricing and billing treatment for your own workload, including expected usage and operational overhead.
- Test a small, representative task with non-sensitive material before considering a wider rollout.
- Record which capabilities have been demonstrated and which still depend on a future release.
The interest form is linked from the official announcement’s “Getting started” section. Submitting interest is not confirmation of access or a launch date for the features still to come.
Brighton Locals’ view
Editorial judgement: more provider choice can be useful, especially for organisations already running workloads on Google Cloud. The meaningful question is whether a particular deployment improves capability, cost and control together. Limited preview access and future security options need to stay visible in that decision.
What happens next
Watch for a wider availability notice and explicit confirmation that the promised privacy features have shipped. Until then, the product’s present access conditions are a better planning basis than the breadth of its launch language.
Our AI-agent login approval report covers a separate control: what an agent may do with credentials once access is granted.
