Brighton recycling centres work differently at the city’s two sites, so choose where to go before loading the car. Whitehawk’s Wilson Avenue site opens longer at weekends, while Hove permits pedestrian access through a specified walking route. Identification, vehicle restrictions and the type of waste can determine whether a trip works.
Brighton recycling centres: compare the opening hours
The council’s opening-hours page gives these normal arrangements. Holiday notices and operational interruptions can still change a particular visit.
- Brighton, Wilson Avenue: Monday–Friday, 8am–4.30pm; Saturday and Sunday, 9am–5pm; bank holidays, 9am–5pm.
- Hove, Modbury Way: Monday–Friday, 8am–4.30pm; Saturday, 8.30am–1.30pm; Sunday, 10.30am–1.30pm; closed on bank holidays.
The council warns that gates may close up to 45 minutes before the advertised finish to clear a queue. Do not plan a first arrival a few minutes before closing. Only queue on the smaller site-access roads, rather than blocking the major approaches.
Which identification should you bring?
The current access page says car users may be asked for a photo driving licence with a city address and matching residency evidence dated within three months. Van users must provide two forms of identification demonstrating city residency. A hired van also requires the rental agreement and must meet the vehicle rules.
If you are taking someone else’s household waste, the council says that resident must come with you and bring their identification. Borrowing a vehicle or helping a relative therefore needs planning beyond finding room for the load.
Walking, cycling and trailers
The council identifies a pedestrian route into Hove through the alley on the right of St Joseph’s Close, between Hove Technical Centre and SIG Roofing. It says pedestrians cannot enter Brighton because there is no safe walking route there. Cyclists and cargo bikes can use the sites but must join the vehicle queue and follow staff directions.
Trailers up to 1.2m can enter Hove; none are allowed at Brighton. Larger or prohibited vehicle bodies and vehicles at or above 3,500kg gross weight are excluded. Business waste needs a commercial facility rather than a household trip.
Why we are flagging conflicting instructions
Veolia’s site directory agrees with the published opening hours, but includes a statement about safe pedestrian access at Brighton that conflicts with the council. Its DIY allowances also do not match the council’s current quantities. For the trip described here, follow the council’s explicit current access instructions and ask for clarification before transporting an unusual load.
We are not blending incompatible figures into a supposedly definitive allowance. The council’s accepted-materials page is the first check for your item. Seek specialist advice for unidentified or hazardous materials rather than handling them to fit a general tip guide.
Make one useful trip
Separate materials before travelling so staff can direct you without unloading a mixed pile repeatedly. Keep the relevant identification where you can reach it. Check an item’s destination before packing the vehicle: household electricals, garden materials and reusable goods may need different containers or arrangements.
For something still in usable condition, consider the council’s donation guidance before disposal. Our Brighton Repair Café guide offers another route to compare for suitable repairable belongings.
Brighton Locals’ view
Our assessment: the two-site choice is useful, but contradictory access details make planning harder than it needs to be. A household should be able to establish the right site, documents and permitted load from consistent instructions. Until the pages agree, check the council’s relevant section and allow time to resolve uncertainty before travelling.
Choose the site for your journey and load, not just its distance from home.
