This Hove Museum guide starts with the details that decide whether a visit will work: ordinary entry is free, the museum normally opens on Monday and Thursday to Sunday, and wheelchair access is restricted to the ground floor despite the presence of a lift. Those are the operator’s published arrangements checked on 14 October 2026, not a first-hand review or a newly announced change.

At a glance

  • Hove Museum of Creativity: 19 New Church Road, Hove, BN3 4AB.
  • Normal opening: Monday and Thursday–Sunday, 10am–5pm; Tuesday and Wednesday closed.
  • Ordinary museum admission is free; some events, tours or school sessions can have separate charges.
  • Discuss access needs with the museum before planning to use particular galleries.

Hove Museum guide: plan by day, not just by price

The operator’s visitor page gives five normal opening days, including Monday. The VisitBrighton listing agrees on those regular hours. A free museum is not necessarily open every day, so avoid planning a Tuesday or Wednesday outing from the admission headline alone.

Café Rust has a shorter published day, 10am–4.30pm. Allow for that if a drink or food break is part of the visit rather than assuming every facility runs until the museum closes. Purchases in a café or shop are separate from free entry; this guide does not quote a meal price.

For Christmas, the museum’s own page lists closure on 24, 25 and 26 December and 1 January. VisitBrighton’s displayed holiday note differs about Christmas Eve. Use the operator’s current dated advice and confirm nearer the visit instead of combining the most convenient hours from two listings.

Why the lift does not settle wheelchair access

The operator explains that the first-floor fire exit is not wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs, so wheelchair access is limited to the ground floor. That restriction applies even though the building has a lift serving upper galleries.

This is a meaningful limit, not a minor footnote. A lift can help some visitors move between floors but cannot establish that every visitor can safely use every gallery. Tell the museum what you want to see and ask which areas and activities are suitable for your party.

The published access statement identifies a ground-floor accessible toilet and baby-changing facilities. Contact the museum on 03000 290900 or info@rpmt.org.uk if the arrangements are decisive for your visit. We have not independently assessed the facilities or certified the venue’s suitability for a particular disability.

What you can plan to explore

The museum’s collection overview includes the Jaipur Gate, Wizard’s Attic toys, early film, Hove history, fine art and contemporary craft. Choose a theme that interests your group rather than treating a small local museum as a checklist to rush through.

VisitBrighton describes Hove’s early film-makers and the film gallery’s optical toys, lanterns and cameras. That provides a distinctive local angle: a visit can connect the town’s history with how images were made and viewed, not just offer somewhere indoors.

The current museum page also lists Alma Haser’s Playing With Your Eyes exhibition from 2 October 2026 to 18 January 2027. A family day on 24 October is a separate event listing. Check its booking and access information rather than assume an ordinary free visit includes every scheduled activity.

Getting there without adding assumptions

Use BN3 4AB in your journey planner and check the operator’s directions. The museum page describes nearby New Church Road buses and a walk from Hove station, but gives differing walking estimates. Those are not a promise of a step-free route or a travel time for everyone.

Free on-site parking is identified for Blue Badge holders only. Do not infer that a car park is free for all visitors. Check the current street signs if using nearby paid parking. Plan the journey home as well as the arrival, particularly when combining a museum visit with a meal or another stop.

If the museum’s closed day does not fit your plans, our Jubilee Library guide offers a different indoor option to compare, not a substitute museum collection.

Brighton Locals’ view

Our assessment is that free entry makes this a useful, flexible local outing, but only when opening days and access limits are stated as prominently as the attractions. A good guide should help someone decide not to travel when the intended visit would not work.

Bottom line: choose the right day and the galleries your group can use before setting out.
