Storm Boelo is bringing another unsettled weekend to the UK. For Brighton on Saturday 24 October, the Met Office forecast checked on Friday shows heavy rain from late morning and gusts reaching around 53mph in the evening.

For weekend planning, the timing matters as much as the daily weather symbol: a relatively drier early start would not mean the same conditions persist into the afternoon.

At a glance

  • Brighton: rain becomes likely around 10am on Saturday, with heavy rain from around 11am.
  • The Friday evening forecast shows gusts reaching 50mph at 5pm, then about 53mph at 10pm.
  • Brighton and Sussex are outside the current Boelo warning areas; the amber warning covers parts of northern UK.
  • Hurstpierpoint’s separate Saturday morning tree walk has been cancelled.

Where is the Storm Boelo warning?

The Met Office’s amber wind warning, issued on Friday morning, covers much of Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland and northern England. It runs from 9pm Saturday 24 October (BST) to 9pm Sunday 25 October (GMT). The clocks go back during that period.

Within the amber area, gusts of 60–70mph are forecast widely, reaching 80mph on exposed coasts. These figures apply to the warned areas, not to Brighton. Sussex is outside the current Boelo amber and yellow warning areas. Friday’s local warning concerns Austen, a separate storm.

Transport disruption, power cuts and damage are possible in the affected northern areas. Anyone travelling there should check the warning map and their operator’s current advice before departure.

Brighton Saturday weather: what the forecast means for plans

The Met Office’s Brighton point forecast shows a relatively quieter morning before rain and stronger winds develop. The evening peak of around 53mph is a forecast gust, not a sustained wind speed or a recorded observation. Sunday currently looks sunnier and mostly dry by day, although it remains breezy.

This outlook concerns Saturday. It is separate from our Friday 23 October wind-warning report. Check the official warnings page for the current geographical areas and validity periods rather than assume a Friday notice covers Saturday.

A Sussex event has already changed

In a notice updated on 22 October, Hurstpierpoint & Sayers Common Parish Council cancelled its 24 October tree walk because of the forecast adverse weather. It hopes to rearrange the event, but no replacement date is confirmed.

The cancellation at the top of that page supersedes the older invitation still visible below it. Anyone who saved the original 10am meeting at Fairfield Recreation Ground car park should not rely on that invitation. Brighton’s forecast gust figures should not be read as a separate forecast for Hurstpierpoint.

What you should do

Recheck the hourly forecast on Friday evening and before leaving on Saturday. Confirm outdoor events with their organiser, and check the relevant operator before any weather-sensitive journey. This report does not establish that a particular road, train or venue will close.

Brighton Locals’ view

Editorial judgement: the later wind peak makes an early dry spell a poor guide to the whole day. Flexible plans are more useful than treating a two-day forecast as a fixed timetable. The council’s cancellation is confirmed; other cancellations should not be guessed.

What happens next

Recheck the Brighton forecast and official warning map before travelling. Timings and warning boundaries can change. For the separate damage during Austen, read our West Pier collapse report.
