A Local’s Guide to Brighton’s Neighbourhoods

Brighton & Hove is really a patchwork of distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own character, and getting to know them is the best way to understand the city.

The Lanes, in the old fishing quarter near the seafront, is a maze of narrow alleys packed with independent jewellers, vintage shops and cafes. A short walk north brings you to North Laine, a livelier, more bohemian district of colourful shopfronts, record stores and street art.

East of the centre, Kemptown is known for its regency architecture, its LGBTQ+ scene along St James’s Street, and a laid-back, artistic atmosphere. West along the coast, Hove offers a quieter pace, elegant seafront squares and some of the city’s best-loved parks.

We’ll be featuring each of these areas in more depth over time, with practical guides to the businesses and spots that make them worth visiting. If there’s a neighbourhood you’d like us to cover next, let us know through our Contact page.
